Turnout Tips with Alan Davies - International Travelling Groom to Carl Hester & stylist to the stars Valegro and Nip Tuck

Alan Davies with Utopia

Over the years I have worked in different disciplines; hunting, eventing, jumping and showing. I love my horses to be turned out immaculately and having Nettex Equine products to hand makes this job so much easier.

Pleasing Plaits

We always plait and use bands for the dressage horses as it is quick and easy and keeps the mane in good condition. I always like to shape the plait for each individual horse I wet the mane and spray with Nettex Plaiting Spray to make it easier to handle the plaits. A spray with Nettex Hi Shimmer Coat Spray really makes them shine for a great finishing touch.

Perfect Quarter Marks

For perfect quarter marks make sure you have Nettex Hi Shimmer Coat Spray and a body brush with stiff bristles. Make the coat damp with the body brush and then spray with Hi Shimmer.   I do a V design on the top of the quarters then sharks teeth on the flanks and then spray again over the top of them to help hold them in place

Keeping white socks white

I always ensure that socks are washed regularly to prevent staining and dirt build up. Always use warm water and towel dry them as near to dry as possible to prevent any unwanted bacterial infections. Using a mild everyday shampoo should be enough – but if you have some big stains then use a shower puff and Nettex Whitening Shampoo to really get them glowing white. Using Nettex Seven Day Mud Away for anything turned out also helps prevent getting the legs caked in mud.

What is in his grooming kit/essential items at shows and at home?

My other essentials are the Nettex Mini range items such as Nettex Mane and Tail Detangler, Plaiting Spray, Stain Remover and Coat Shine for that last minute sheen.
