Get Show Jumping Results with Tips from Billy Twomey

Olympic rider Billy Twomey is currently ranked in the top 100 riders in the Longines World Rankings.  Billy has had great success with horses including Tinka’s Serenade, Diaghilev, Royal Du Rouet and Aminko.  He gives us his top pointers for success in a Championship environment.

“The week before the Championship, have a lesson with a professional or someone competent.  They will ensure you have all the basics in place and remind you of things you need to focus on, so you are prepared and ready to go”.

“Try to experience a competition in a big ring before the Championship.  If your horse has never seen a big Championship ring, he may find it a bit daunting”.

“When walking the course, always make sure you walk the line you plan to ride.  This way there will be no surprises when you come to do your round.  Measure the distances to make it easier for you and your horse.  It is also very helpful to have looked at the course plan including the jump off before walking the course.  When you have walked the course, go over the jump off course and plan your routes.  You won’t have another chance to stand in the ring and look at the lines you plan to take in the jump off close up”.

“Organisation is key to success in showjumping.  Plan ahead of your class and make sure you get all your admin sorted.  Declaring for your class on time is very important.  Arrange to have someone to help you and make sure you avoid having to rush.  Feeling flustered will only make you anxious before going into the ring”.

“If you are lucky enough to have a late draw in the class, make sure you watch other riders to see how the course is riding”.

“If your horse is at all nervous, it can be very useful to work him on the flat well before the class to settle him and let him experience his surroundings.  That way, when you get him back out of his stable before his class he will be familiar with what is happening around him and he will be ready to concentrate on jumping his fences”.

“Good luck and enjoy the experience!”
